Best Silver IRA Companies of 2026

How the leading dealers compare for a silver IRA, and why the premium you pay matters more with silver than gold

Most gold IRA companies also handle silver, but they are not equally good at it. Silver premiums vary much more than gold premiums, minimums differ, and some firms push collectible coins that cost far more than bullion. We ranked the companies below using the same Wealth Defender HQ scoring method we use for all precious metals providers: review depth and sentiment across major platforms, fee and premium transparency, product range, buyback terms, and complaint history.

    At a glance

    • Top overall for silver IRAs: Lear Capital (4.1 / 5). Handles IRA and direct delivery, low entry point
    • Best for large rollovers: Augusta Precious Metals (3.9 / 5). $50,000 minimum, strong education
    • Most hands-on guidance: National Gold Group (3.8 / 5)
    • IRS rule: silver must be .999 fine and stored at an approved depository
    • Biggest cost to compare: the premium over spot on each silver product

How we scored silver IRA companies

Scores reflect published consumer reviews weighted by volume and recency, fee and premium disclosure, the quality of the IRA process (custodian partners, transfer help, depository options), buyback policy, and regulatory or complaint history. Companies cannot pay for a higher score. Full details are on our methodology page.

For silver specifically, we paid extra attention to whether a company will quote plain bullion products (Silver Eagles, Maple Leafs, bars) and state the premium over spot in writing before you fund the account.

What a silver IRA really costs

Account costs are similar to a gold IRA: roughly $50 to $100 to set up, $75 to $150 a year for the custodian, and $100 to $300 a year for storage and insurance. Silver takes far more vault space per dollar than gold, so some depositories charge more for large silver holdings.

The premium over spot is the cost that decides the outcome. On a $50,000 purchase, the difference between a 15% and a 35% premium is about 10,000 dollars of silver you never receive. Always ask for the spot price, the product, the per-ounce price, and the buyback price on the same day.

Questions to ask before you open a silver IRA

    • What is the premium over spot on this exact product, in writing?
    • What would you pay me to buy it back today?
    • Which custodian and depository will hold it, and what are their yearly fees?
    • Is this bullion or a collectible or proof coin?
    • Is this a direct trustee-to-trustee transfer?

    Frequently asked questions

    What is a silver IRA?

A silver IRA is a self-directed IRA that holds IRS-approved physical silver instead of, or alongside, stocks and funds. The silver is owned by the IRA and held at an approved depository. It follows the same contribution, rollover, and distribution rules as any other IRA.

What silver is allowed in an IRA?

The IRS requires silver to be at least .999 fine. Common eligible products include American Silver Eagles, Canadian Silver Maple Leafs, and bars from accredited refiners. Collectible and graded numismatic coins are generally not eligible.

Why do silver premiums matter more than gold premiums?

Silver has a much lower price per ounce, so fabrication and distribution costs make up a larger share of what you pay. Premiums of 15% to 40% over spot on popular silver coins are common, versus single digits on many gold bullion products. The same dollar amount can buy very different quantities of silver depending on the dealer.

Is silver or gold better for an IRA?

Neither is better in general. Silver is more volatile and more tied to industrial demand, and it takes more vault space per dollar, so storage can cost more. Gold is steadier and more compact. Many buyers who want both keep silver as the smaller share.

Can I roll over a 401(k) into a silver IRA?

Yes, usually from a former employer's plan. Use a direct trustee-to-trustee transfer so there is no withholding and no 60-day deadline. The process is the same as a gold IRA rollover.

Can I keep silver IRA metals at home?

No. IRA metals must be held by an approved trustee or depository. Home storage setups can cause the IRS to treat the account as distributed and taxable.
